JP TRAVELER STORY

What I wish I had known before using Tokyo stations

A practical account of transfers, station exits, luggage and the small choices that made Tokyo transport easier.

Tokyo stations became much easier once I stopped thinking of each station as a single building. I saved the exit number for every destination, allowed extra time for large interchange stations, and avoided moving luggage during the evening peak. An IC card handled most local journeys, but I still checked the operator and platform before following a route. The most useful habit was saving the destination address in Japanese and taking a screenshot of the final walking section.
